Barbara Greco January 26 th , 2008 Dr. Mannino Section 24 Laurence Shames: The More Factor In “The More Factor” Laurence Shames claims that “Americans have been somewhat backward in adopting values, hopes, ambitions that have to do with things other than more. The concept of growth has been applied almost exclusively to things that can be measured, counted, weighed” (78). American society has proved to make Shames’ claim correct that culture values quantity over quality. Americans have proven to have “want more” attitudes throughout society and culture simply values wealth. American culture values measurable things, such as material possessions, and measurable things are dependent on wealth. The “American Dream” was the ideal plan that many had to one day become wealthy. Being wealthy or having the chance to become wealthy makes an American greedy in today’s society. Television plays a large role in promoting these materialistic and greedy behaviors. The NBC hit game show “Deal or No Deal” is a show based on luck and greed.
