As an adoptive parent, I have firsthand seen the hardships that children in the system can go through. When we look at individuals, children and adolescents, that have been involved in the justice system, I think that it is important that we look at what that means. Children who are involved in the justice system may be kids who are involved because of foster care and the trauma that has come before and during removal from their homes. They could also be children that are with their biological parents or families that are struggling with their own issues. Dierkhising et al (2013), state that even with 30% of just-involved youth, upwards of 90% are exposed to traumatic events either during or prior to their involvement with the justice system. At the same time, those involved with decision-making within the justice system have very little training in normal or abnormal childhood development, and therefore are hard-pressed to
