ME306 Spring 2008 Dr. E. M. Austin Homework 3 due 4:30 Wednesday 1/30 1. (15 pts) A solid cylindrical bar of radius r is subjected to concentrated loads P , T , R , and S as shown. The black bar is welded to the end of the cylinder. Each of these loads contributes to one or more of the internal re- actions (axial, torsion, bending moment, and transverse shear) at the cross section that contains points A and B . Your job is to determine which internal reaction(s) and stress component each external loads contributes to at points A and B . Use the sign to indicate whether the stress is positive or negative, and make sure you put moments and forces in the correct locations. Some boxes will contain multiple loads; many boxes will be empty.
