Psych 100: Intro to Psychology Chapter 2 Review Neuroscience and Behavior Franz Gall- phrenology Neural Communication Neurons Structure: Dendrites Axon Myelin Sheath How Neurons Communicate Action Potential and threshold All-or-None Response: A strong stimulus can trigger more neurons to fire, and to fire more often, but it does not affect the action potential’s strength or speed. Intensity of an action potential remains the same throughout the length of the axon. Threshold is the level of stimulation required to trigger a neural impulse Synapse and neurotransmitters Neurotransmitters (chemicals) released from the sending neuron travel across the synapse (the junction between dendrite and axon- synaptic gap or cleft ) and bind to receptor sites on the receiving neuron, thereby influencing it to generate an action potential. How Neurotransmitters Influence Us Table 2.1 Agonists Antagonists Reuptake The Nervous System The Peripheral Nervous System Somatic Nervous System (voluntary) Autonomic Nervous System Sympathetic (arousing) Parasympathetic (calming) The Central Nervous System “Thinking, feeling, acting” Reflexes The Endocrine System The Endocrine System is the body’s “slow” chemical communication system. Communication is carried out by hormones synthesized by a set of glands. Pituitary Gland Adrenal Glands The Brain
