Chapter 2 Text AssignmentThe Planting of English America, 1500-1733READ pages 23-39, define the following terms and understand their significance:1.)King Henry VIII-He was the King of England who broke with the Roman Catholic church in 1530’s.Thislaunched the English Protestant Reformation.He’s famous for having 6 wives and either divorcing or havingthem executed to get rid of them.2.)Queen Elizabeth-She was a protestant queen of England, during Shakespeare’s time. She privatelysupported English buccaneers, like Sir Francis Drake.She was also the queen when the Spanish Armada wasdefeated.3.)Sir Walter Raleigh-He was the leader of the first attempt to found a colony of settlers in North America forthe English. He founded Roanoke with a group of settlers.Later the Roanoke colony mysteriously vanishedwhile he was busy at home.Raleigh was beheaded for treason after a falling out with Queen Elizabeth.4.)Primogeniture-It was laws that decreed that only the eldest sons were eligible to inherit landed estates.Thiscaused many landholder’s ambitious younger sons go elsewhere to find there fortunes.5.)Joint-Stock Company-They provided the financial means so that English colonization could happen inNorth America.6.)Virginia Company of London-It was a joint-stock company that received a charter from King James I ofEngland for a settlement.The main attraction was the promise of gold.Like most joint-stock companies ofthe day, the Virginia Company was intended to endure for a couple years after which the stockholders hopedto liquidate it for profit.They started Jamestown.7.)Captain John Smith-He took over Virginia colony in 1608 and whipped the gold-hungry colonists into linewith the rule, “He who shall not shall not eat.”He was kidnapped by an Indian Chief Powhantan.He wassubjected to a mock execution where Pocahontas (Powhantan’s daughter) “saved him”.This was to impressSmith with Powhatan’s power and show the Indians desire of peaceful relations.8.)Powhatan-He was the chief of the Indians near the Virginia colony during John Smith’s time.His daughterwas Pocahontas.At first there was peace between his people and the English, but eventually war broke outand without enough unity in his “Powhatans Confederacy” they were overrun and pushed out of Virginia.9.)Pocahontas-She was the Daughter of Powhatan, and became an intermediary between the Indians and thesettlers.She also married the colonist John Rolfe.10.)Lord De La Warr-He took over as leader of the Virginia colony, in 1610, and imposed a harsh militaryregime on the colony. He followed his orders to declare war on the Indians in the Jamestown region.He wasa veteran of vicious campaigns against the Irish, and he introduced “Irish tactics”; where they would raidIndian villages, burn houses, confiscate provisions and torch cornfields.
