Chapter 7 Text Assignment The Road To Revolution, 1763-1775 READ pages 119-137, define the following terms and understand their significance: 1.)Mercantilism-According to mercantilism doctrine, colonies excited only to help the mother country meet their goals.Mercantilism is the idea to export more then you import. 2.)Navigation Laws-It was a measure to enforce the mercantile system.It restricted commerce to and from the colonies to English vessels. 3.)Privy Council-It was council that reviewed legislative actions done by the American colonies. They had the power to “royal veto’ things.It was only used 469 times out of 8,563 laws. 4.)Royal Veto-It was the Privy Councils right to veto laws that that the colonist legislative passed that might conflict with British regulations or policy.It was used sparingly. Only 469 times out of 8,563 laws. 5.)George Grenville-He was a prime minister of England. An honest and able financier.He enforced the Navigation Laws. And start various taxation acts in the American Colonies, like Sugar Act, Quartering Act, and Stamp Act. 6.)Sugar Act-The first law ever passed by the Parliament to raising revenue in the colonies for the crown.Among various provisions, it increased the duty on foreign sugar imported from the West Indies. 7.)Quartering Act-It required certain colonies to provide food and quarters for British troops. 8.)Stamp Act-It was to raise revenues to support the new military force.The stamp act required the use of stamped paper or the affixing of stamps, certifying payment of tax.Involved were about fifty trade items and certain types of commercial and legal documents, including playing cards, pamphlets, newspaper diplomas, bills of lading, and marriage licenses. 9.)Admiralty Courts-It was a court in the colonies that didn’t use juries.And you were guilty until proven innocent.A privilege that the English and American colonials held dear. 10.)Virtual Representation-The idea that every member of Parliament represented all British subjects, even those Americans in Boston or Charleston, who had never voted for a member of the London Parliament. 11.)Stamp Act Congress-It was Twenty seven distinguished delegates from nine colonies that met together in New York City.After dignified debate the members drew up a statement of their Parliament to repeal the repugnant legislation. 12.)Non-importation agreements-The Stamp Act Congress decided to have people boycott British goods. Like Woolen garments of home spun fashionable, and the eating of lamb chops was discouraged so that they wool bearing sheep would be allowed to mature. 13.)Sons of Liberty-They colonial protesters who took the law into their own hands.They enforced the Nonimportation agreement against violators, often with a generous coat of tar and feathers. 14.)Declaratory Act-It was proclaimed by Parliament after repealing the Stamp Act.This futile measure proclaimed that Parliament had the right to “to bind” the colonies “in all cases whatsoever”. 15.)Townshend Acts-Parliament passed the acts in 1767.
