Discuss the contributions to the “human side of enterprise” as articulated by Elton Mayo, ChesterBarnard, Abraham Maslow, and Douglas McGregor. How does this organizational theory school ofthought differ from the classical and neoclassical schools of thought? In your opinion, which school ofthought is most applicable for public and/or nonprofit organizations and why?The “Human side of Enterprise” refers to the human relations aspect of organization. Human relationsentail the theories of organization that stress worker’s noneconomic need and motivations on the job,seeking to identify these needs and how they satisfy them, and focusing on working conditions andsocial interactions among workers (Milakovich & Gordon, 2013). This school of organizational theory isoften referred to as the Human Relations School. It differs from the classical and neoclassical theoriesthat focused first on a scientific approach, with the premise that public administration was a science thatshould be observed to identify the best methods to operate an organization and later transitioned toincorporate behavioral science into management by placing emphasis on the role of mangers to getemployees to get work done.
