Microbiology Task 3Ashley BurnsWGU: MicrobiologyTask 31
Microbiology Task 3IntroductionAntibiotics are given to patients to slow down or destroy a bacterium. They areselectively toxic, meaning that the antibiotics are targeted to harm bacteria cells, not the hostcells. Most antibiotics are classified as broad or narrow spectrum. Broad spectrum antibioticswork on many different types of microorganisms and are best used when the cause of theinfection is unknown. This increases the chance that the bacteria are susceptible (Black & Black2016 p.374).Narrow spectrum antibiotics work on a smaller group of microorganisms. Theseantibiotics are used when the organism causing the infection in known, thus decreases thechances that that organism will develop a drug resistance. Also, using a narrow spectrumantibiotic decreases the damage done to the normal microbes, or flora, that occur in or on thebody (Black 2016 p.374).
