BUSI 820 Quantitative Research Methods Assignment 3 Assignment 3 A 3.1: Chapter 5, Problem 5.1, Count Math Courses Taken. A 3.1.a. Process Process 5.1 a. counting the math course taken by each of 75 participants: First: click on “folder” icon on taskbar in SPSS select “hsbdata.sav” file and click on “ok” to input all the data in SPSS and get access to Variable View screen. Second: click on Transform at Variable View screen Count Values Within Case Count Occurrences of Values Within Case window. Third: type matchrs in the Target Variable box as the name for the new variable and math courses taken in the Target Label box Fourth: click on algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, trigonometry , and calculus in the left box and move them to the Numeric Variables box at right by clicking on the arrow . Fifth: click on Define values Value to Count window. Sixth: type 1 in the Value box and click on add at Value to Count window to count how many courses taken (coded as 1). Seventh: click on Continue Click on OK . The new variable matchrs is displayed at the last column in Data view and last row in Variable view. The way to the check count statement is to look at the numbers in algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus columns of the participants. And then, compare the numbers to the one in the column of matchrs. For example , participant #7 has 1 in columns algebra 1, algebra 2, and geometry, and 0 in columns trigonometry and calculus , which indicates this participant have taken 3 math courses. Thus, the number in column matchrs should be 3. It is recommended to check multiple participants to make sure the count works right.
