Therefore, evidence based practice is critical in the prevention of deep vein thrombosis which could lead to something more severe and even death. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the deliberate use of current best evidence to make decisions about patient care; it considers the patient’s preference and values, as well as one’s own critical expertise (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2010, p. 5). Evidence based practice is significant to nursing and health care because it raises the standard of competent nursing and improves the quality of health care. A competent nurse knows how important it is to apply graduated compression stockings to an immobile patient at risk for deep vein thrombosis formation. The intervention of applying graduated compression stockings is important since these stockings prevent blood from pooling in the legs and reduce stasis. By keeping the blood from pooling in the legs there is less chance that the blood will clot unnecessarily. Furthermore, patients wearing graduated compression stockings have less venous insufficiency. The intervention of apply graduated compression stockings is a great choice
