In a society concerned with the purity of blood, protecting the blood line and marrying into a higher social position purifies the blood. The two perspectives differ in that hypergamy is the practice of marrying a spouse of higher socio-economic status, whereas, casa chica refers to controlling women in a marriage to protect the blood line. With casa chica, one should marry a white woman and have an affair with a mulatto woman. The distinct meanings of this practice that each term embodies is that with hypergamy women marry higher and therefore whiten the bloodline which refers to casa chica. In another aspect she is seen as a protector, a champion, who looks out for everyone alike. She takes on more of a masculine characteristic.
