A major turning point in the Civil War was the battle of Gettysburg, which took place July 1st through July 3rd, 1863. This battle is said to be one of the most important engagements inthe Civil War with the Union victory. Over this three-day period the Union and the Confederates fought endlessly, and both had many casualties. Each day of the battle had an importance on the outcome of this event, leading to the Gettysburg Address and the reform of America. It was July 1st, 1863 and very hot beginning the first day of the battle. On this day seven thousand infantry men were led by Confederate Major General Henry Heth looking for a fight with the Union. It was around five thirty in the morning when Lieutenant Marcellus E. Jones fired a warning shot with his rifle because he seen the confederate cavalry patrols shadows in thedistance. The first confrontation took place between Confederate Major General Henry Heth andUnion Brigadier General John Buford. The Union dismounted and got into position waiting for backup from Major General John Reynolds First Corps to strengthen the unions position.
