Social Class Social Class : A large group of people who rank closely to one another in wealth, power, and prestige. Wealth – Value of someone’s property, person’s net worth. - Confused with income and all sorts of other things - Habitat for Humanity: Outlet for increasing wealth in our nation especially for those we consider lower income Wealth vs. Income : Not the same - Wealth : Person’s net worth o Property - Income : Flow of money, from business, wages, royalties, etc. Distribution of Income: Richer have grown richer, poorer have grown poorer Most in poverty = too young or too old Assumption is that “blaming the victim” – blaming the poor for being poor Power: the ability to carry out your will despite resistance. Power elite: Referring to those who make big decisions in US society Occupation and Prestige: (respect/regard) - They pay more - They require more education - They entail more abstract thought - They offer greater autonomy - Upward mobility Social Mobility: Upward/Downward
