Wild Card: Crime and Punishment and Atonement Michelle Rosenberg The two wildcards I picked were Raskolnikov giving Katerina Marmeladov his last money in Crime and Punishment and Cecilia cutting off contact with her family from Atonement . Shortly after Raskolnikov spontaneously gives Katerina Marmeladov his last money, he regrets it. At first, Raskolnikov acts in a charitable and humane manner. He tells Katerina, “Since that evening, when I learned how devoted he was to all of you, and how he respected and loved you especially, Katerina Ivanovna…Here are…twenty roubles…and if this can serve to help you, then…I…in short, I’ll come again” (186). At first I did not get why Raskolnikov was acting nobly all the sudden. He gives up his last money, the money his mother and sister worked to provide him, because he feels sympathetic to the Marmeladov family. Raskolnikov has good intentions, is trying to act decently, and is sacrificing himself for a fellow man. I then realized that he regrets his kindness shortly after because of his superiority theory.
