Invertebrate Pre-Lab Colin Van Es Biol 1201 ZDE October 9, 2007 Before researching the assigned websites (Portuguese Man-of-War, Wonders of the Sea, Flatworms), I knew that invertebrates were organisms that did not have a spine or interior skeletal structure. Some of them do not even have a support structure in their bodies, such as a jelly fish. Some have an exoskeleton, like certain types of insects. I also knew that invertebrates come in many different sizes. The Portuguese Man-of-War is quite large while a flatworm and insects are small. After reviewing the assigned websites (Portuguese Man-of-War, Wonders of the Sea, Flatworms), I learned the following: 1) vinegar was formerly a treatment for Portuguese Man-of-War stings, 2) jellyfish remain dangerous several hours after death, 3) Corals, Sea Anemones, and Jellyfish are all types of Cnidarians, 4) There are 20,000 species of flatworms, 5) Flatworms can be free living or parasitic, and 6) Tapeworm is a

I will use a microscope and pre made slides to study the structural organization of multicellular organisms. I will also takes notes on and compare the specializations of the organisms in the reproductive and digestive systems. I will also notice any symmetry within an organism. The information from the given websites (Portuguese Man-of-War, Wonders of the Sea, Flatworms) will be useful in that I now understand relationships between different organisms. This will help me notice and compare differences. Bibliography: Portuguese Man-of-War. October 8, 2007. <http://www.aloha.com/~lifeguards/portugue.html> Wonders of the Sea: Cnidarians.
