Nguyen 1 Khoi Nguyen Expository Writing II - M Professor Gaines 3/4/2020 Structured Repetition The poem “Villanelle” by Marilyn Hacker, is a short poem that uses a pre-existing poem structure called a villanelle by the French to designate a short poem of popular character favoured by poets in the late 16th century.(Augustyn) “Villanelle” is about a cycle of celebration and separation between two lovers, who celebrate their love and lament their separation. The speaker of the poem is one or both of the lovers as they consistently use the words “our” and “we”. Hacker uses the inherent structure of villanelles to amplify the effect of the cycle of celebration and separation while using enjambment to reinforce the theme of cycles while adding a sense of urgency and speed. These cycles of celebration and separation are marked by both physical and emotional ties from each of the lovers. In the cycle of celebration, the lovers have their bodies fused, “and touch each other, speechless and amazed;”(Hacker) Their bodies “communicate the unlettered power [they] have raised.” and “In wordless darkness [they] learn wordless praise.”(Hacker) The speaker shows in these lines that when they are expressing their love physically, they feel their emotions connect, and learn more about each other.
