Cassandra Peragine CHEM 1412 Reid 08-03-2020 Determination of Thermodynamic Quantities for a Chemical Reaction Objective: The main objective in this experiment was to determine the changes in standard enthalpy, standard entropy, and standard free energy using equilibrium constants at different temperatures. Answers to pre lab questions: 1. The sign should be negative 2. DG is negative, K>1, favors products DG is zero, K=1 DG is positive, K<1, favors reactants 3. In the forward direction the reaction is endothermic because heat is being added. 4. The K c value will decrease as temperature increases. Introduction: In this experiment a reaction occurred between [Co(H 2 O) 6 ] and 4Cl - to create [CoCl 4 ] 2- . This specific reaction has temperature dependent equilibrium, this means that depending on the temperature, the reaction will favor either the reactants or products more. When [CoCl 4 ] 2- solution is created it turns a bright pink color, but when heat is applied the solution turns into a deep blue color, this color change happens because Co2+ ions bind to Cl- shifting towards the product side of the reaction.
