Missouri compromise Election of 1800 Feds supported Adams- he wasnt popular but everyone didnt like Hamilton Jefferson was republican There was mudslinging still involved In the election that Republicans won it wasnt clear who had really won at first There wasnt a ticket Originally state legislature would meet and decided who would go to the electoral college the most votes got to be president and the 2 nd most got to be the vice president During this election there was a mix up There was the same number of votes for Jefferson and Aaron Burr Aaron Burr refused to back down and the election had to be taken to the House of Representative Jefferson and Burr were both Republicans and the House was Federalist They hated both of them Burr was hated the most Hamilton came in support of Jefferson Burr was an ass The Federalist allow this transfer from factions (the power was transferred from Federalists to Republicans) The Federalists allow the system to work They thought Jefferson would make a mess and they would be able to take control of the government again in 4 years They have a ;large number of federalist in congress and in the court system The only power switch was the presidency Jefferson in office He was a complicated man he really doesnt make sense He was brilliant, he owned a library, he was self educated and read a lot He wrote a lot of letters, and only wrote 1 book He was aristocratic He was born into a wealthy family He became very wealthy as an adult he lived well and his home was very sophisticated He had a French chef cook for him He grew up in deferential culture He thought he was supposed to live well He advocated that he was champion of common folk He ate at a round table because everyone was the same there was no head person at the table He is all about liberty but doesnt follow lead of contemporary He was a member of the plantation owning class He doesnt free his slaves when he died Some of his slaves were his children The reason why his children were slaves were because they were 1/8 th black Goals He believed in commerce (commercial agriculture ) Harvest had to be sold over seas He likes trade but in aggregated goods He believed in expansion- geographic created more opportunity He wanted to limit the size of power of the government (reduce it, facilitate policy for him and farmers) He does deal with the Alien and Sedition acts...
