January 16, 2008 Communication is complex o Hundreds of definitions have been developed o Each definition establishes a focus o A definition can be either a discovery or a construction One is discovered We find it, figure it out o Ex: force = MA One we construct We make it for a purpose o Communication lends itself to constructed definitions o Definitions establish and limit the focus of the user Communication : a systematic process in which people interact through symbols to create and interpret meanings (wood, 2006) o this is general enough that it will apply to every concept of communication that we learn in this class o humans are the only people that are capable of systematic dilution we can make ourselves believe something that is false to be true which definition is “best? o Is communication intentional ? Not necessarily, we can sometimes portray something that wasn’t intentionally what the speaker meant to portray
