Summary of Bordo’s Thanks, Calvin! Bordo’s essay, “Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body,” she argues that looks invent everything, that image has its standards. She states, “The bodies of most movie stars and models are fully dressed even when naked.” (213). Making it clear that even with no clothes on, the body has its different flaws that cameras and makeup cover. Even now in todays highly imaged world, the male body has been exposed for presentation to the opposite or even same sex. In Bordo’s section Thanks, Calvin! she argues that throughout this century Calvin Klein has discovered the “fact that women might enjoy looking at sexy, well-hung young men who don’t appear to be about to rape them.” (176). Bordo also states, Klein’s bisexuality has allowed him to view the presentation of the male body from both sides. Although Klein states that many of the men in his ads are not gay, it shows that men care what they look like. Proving that image is the top of the scale when attracting sex. Woman would much rather be attracted to the standard, good looking man that takes care of himself, but doesn’t worry so much about what he looks like. The section in Bordo’s essay supports her argument that the image of the male body has become more looked at and concerned by the men who are being presented. Klein’s images of the male body represent what many woman look for in a man. The young, athletic, and flexible men turn on the sexual fantasies of many woman and men. Both sexes would rather see someone who cares about the body, and not so much that they worry about taking an hour away from the gym....
