Brad Zink Comm 212 Speech 2: Hiccups Introduction: In life, there are many things that annoy people. Things such as homework, a little brother, or maybe drama. One large annoyance for myself tho is a thing called hiccups. Hiccups are something that aggreviate me a lot and today I am going to be talking about them. Main Points: How do you get them? How do you get rid of them? Interesting facts Thesis: Hiccups are a common thing that happens to everyday people and it is something that cannot not be avoided I. What are Hiccups A. Ancient Greek Theory 1. Greek Physician Galen - “Simply violent emotions that began in the stomach and erupted out the mouth” B. Normal Breathing 1. Take in air from mouth and nose 2. Flows to pharynx 3. Past the glottis and in to the larynx and trachea 4. Ends in lungs C. Phrenic Nerves 1. Control the movement and sensation of the diaphragm 2. Any iratation to these nerves induce spasm of the diaphragm D. Short Breaths 1. Spasm causes a person to take a short, quick breath that
