Music Appreciation Notes 10/23 Ereserves page password “phrase” George Frideric Handel’s Messiah (1742) o Genre: Oratorio o Written in 24 days o Premiered at the Great Music Hall, Dublin on April 13, 1742 o 3 Acts: 1. Christmas Story 2. Easter Story 3. Redemption of the World through Faith Da Capo Aria: a type of aria which is organized in 3 parts: o 1. Opening section o 2. Contrasting second section o 3. Repetition of the first section with elaborations (often improvised) o Found in some operas, oratorios, and cantatas of the Baroque era. A-B-A’ Ritornello: a short instrumental melody played by the orchestra in some Baroque arias and concertos, which is heard several times throughout a movement (in whole or in part). Aria: “Rejoice greatly” from Messiah (1742) o Movement no. 18 o From Part 1 (xmas section) o Form: da capo aria o For soprano soloist and orchestra o Homophonic o Lots of melismas (where a person sings 1 syllable over a bunch of pitches)
