Ricky Vicenzi Physics 110 Lab B 1D- Motion: Measuring g Purpose The purpose of this experiment was to describe the motion of a freely-falling object using its position, velocity, and acceleration, and then to compare the acceleration to the expected value. Abstract The object whose motion we studied was released from a position of rest, and fell freely for several feet. During the fall, its position, which is defined as any specific point in space, was recorded at consecutive equal intervals of time. Evaluating its different positions at the various points in time (ranging from .05 to .35 seconds) gave all the information needed to complete a detailed analysis of its motion. It’s acceleration, a measure of how quickly the object’s velocity was changing (change in velocity / change in time), was fairly consistent, ranging from 940-1000 cm/s 2 . Conclusion i ’ ’’ ]\The measured acceleration of the falling object should have been extremely close to the rate of acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s2) and this was confirmed by the average acceleration coming out to 9.67 m/s2. There was a 1.3% error between the average acceleration of the falling object, and the acceleration due to gravity. This was mostly due to human error during the experiment, but this small percentage does not detract from the experiment’s intentions and results....
