Ricky Vicenzi Physics 110 Lab B Purpose The purpose of this experiment was to understand force, distance, and center of mass and how they relate to torque by weighing various masses along different pivot points on a meter stick. Abstract At the onset of the experiment, we weighed a meter stick, which came out to .126 kg. This meter stick was then placed on various pivot points contained within its 100 cm, ranging from directly in the middle at .5 m to .1 m down at the end of the stick. Several different sized masses were hung on both sides of the pivot using rubber bands. Adjusting the masses’ distances away from their respective pivot points allowed balance to be achieved in every case. When the pivot was in the center and with equal weights being used, as in the first test, the weights needed to be equal distances away from the center (.4 m) in order to attain balance. This shows that the force, which can be defined as an action that causes a mass to accelerate (force= mass * acceleration), of each mass
