785 Words America receives a great deal criticism for its extensive involvement in global affairs as the “Goliath” of the world. Michael Mandelbaum’s The Case for Goliath is a response to accusations of America as a power-hungry empire. He explains how America came to its position as a super power, and the benefits other nations realize because of America’s actions. He also explains that even though the world may disapprove of American foreign policy, changing them could have disastrous results. Mandelbaum explains his rationale of America as a “benign Goliath” that “functions as the world’s government” through its provision of world security, public goods and international economic benefits (Mandelbaum, XVI). He also describes the resenting and unappreciative attitudes of many nations who do not realize the extent of their dependency upon American foreign policy. There are many references in current politics to America as the “world police force”. Mandelbaum agrees with these views and points to American’s actions of reassurance, nuclear nonproliferation and enforcement in his writing.
