With a Mc Donald’s on every corner, high stress jobs with long hours, and no motivation to exercise, it is easy to see how obesity has become such a problem in America. Americans are notorious for their lethargic lifestyles and “super sized” eating habits. The percentage of obese Americans has drastically increased over the last decade; in 2004 it was ranked as the greatest health threat to Americans and was responsible for an estimated 400,000 deaths (1). In resent years, obesity has become a health risk that can be surgically treated. This, however, should not be the first approach to treat obesity. There are many successful diets and exercise regimes that can help a mildly obese person. Surgically treated obesity is best for candidates who have a BMI, or body mass indicator, of 40 or more. These people are typically 100 pounds overweight. Patients with a lower BMI may also be considered for surgery, given their obesity is in conjunction with other serious obesity-related health threats (1). There are two different types of surgical approaches, Restrictive and Malabsorpitive, both types of bariatic surgeries are not without serious risks and life-changing long-term effects. Restrictive surgeries are named for their restriction of food intake. These procedures create a small pouch at the end of the esophagus where food enters the stomach, this pouch initially holds one ounce and later expands to hold about two to three ounces. They aim to reduce the amount of food and promote a feeling of “fullness” by reducing the stomach to a much smaller size. After food is eaten, it eventually travels through the normal digestive system. There are two commonly performed restrictive surgeries, Adjustable Gastric Banding and Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (2).
