26 February 2008 Analyzing Photography When one looks at artwork and photography, he or she must look deeper into the picture in order to find a meaning or a sense of mood that is present. In The Curious Writer, Ballenger shows one how to analyze a photograph in his chapter Ways of Inquiry. In this certain photograph, many different thoughts may arise when one looks at it, or “explores” it. This picture brings about a sense of love and admiration for new life as the viewer notices a fatherly-like figure holding what seems to be his newborn child. The first aspect of the picture that is noticeable is the man’s genuine smile as he holds this newborn baby. Without this smile, the photograph would change immensely as it brings about the sense of love and family that is obvious in this picture. When one attempts to explain this photograph, it is difficult to express the feelings one receives when viewing the picture. The love and affection between the two figures in this picture is so genuine and real; even as one figure is a newborn child, one
