O’Leary Brittney O’Leary Professor Faunce Gen Ed 111 12 December 2007 The Proclamation of Israel and First Arab-Israeli War The late nineteen forties brought many issues to face in the Middle East. The first Arab-Israeli War created a spiral effect of hardships and conflicts between the two. On May 14 , 1948 Israel was announced an independent state. Minutes after the initial announcement, the UN recognized Israel. Problems arose when the UN mediator, Count Folke Bernadotte was assassinated by members of the Stern Gang. Bernadotte was known for saving over 5,000 Jewish people. Originally the United Nations wanted to divide Palestine into two areas; one Jewish state and one Arab state. The UN had divided the area in a way that Jerusalem was to be preserved. The conflict arose because the Arab people felt that they had essentially been given nothing. The Arab population was too large for the miniscule amount of land they had been given. The Jewish people were given such a large amount of Israel because
