Chapter 4: The “loss of China” Communist (China’s Communist Party or CCP) VS Nationalist (Kuomintang or KMT or National People’s Party) 1912 – Republic of China is established 1921 - Sun Yatsen (founder and head of KMT) becomes the provisional president 1925 – Sun Yatsen dies; Chiang Kai-shek (Sun’s military aide and 2 nd in command) becomes party leader 1926 – Northern Expedition to overthrow the warlord-backed government in Beijing KMT Allies with the CCP and Soviet Union 1927 – Chiang launches attack against CCP and becomes the recognized leader of China’s government 1934-35 - “Long March”; Having withstood four of Chiang Kai-shek 's campaigns against their base area, the Communists were nearly defeated by his fifth attack. The remaining 85,000 troops broke through Nationalist lines and fled north to the Shaanxi Province led by Mao Zedong. 1937 – Sino-Japanese war; Japan invades China; KMT and CCP form uneasy alliance; US supports Chiang 1945 – Japan is defeated and Chinese Civil War resumes
