Understanding emotional development is critical for understanding emotional problems that may appear later in life (Broderick & Blewitt, 2020). People are adept at discerning the emotions of others as they serve many purposes. Emotions can serve as a major means of communication, are important for cognitive function, and have a role to play in overall mental health and wellness. Defining what emotions are can be widely debated; however, many old and new theorists tend to agree that emotional experiences have both physiological and interpretive components (Broderick & Blewitt, 2020). Research and practice around understanding and supporting emotional development during infancy and early childhood years have been in existence for decades. Emotional competencies are increasingly recognized as critical for children's success throughout their life (Darling-Churchill & Lippman, 2016).
