Era of the work •Inherit the wind is a post-war play, and its concerns are those of Americans after the second world war, which was the central; political and social event of the twentieth century. • Lawrence and Lee in the early 40s and 50s, recognized a parallel to the anti-intellectual fervor of the southern opponents to evolution in the current American landscape. •The conflict between the north and south in Inherit the wind functions as an indication of the greater conflict to come in the south during the 1960s.One of the two undisputed world political powers

The Scopes monkey trial • The work of drama created during the post-war era of America was inspired by the famous “Scopes monkey trial” • During the 1920’s, a man named Scopes challenged the Butler’s act and taught Darwin’s theory in his class, leading to his arrest. • The intense courtroom drama was enlightened with the arrival of William Jenings Brian; the prosecutor, and Clarence Darrow, an agnostic. • Brian’s testimony was stricken from the record, resulting in a guilty verdict for Scopes and a victory for Bryan, though Darrow and Scopes won a moral victory that reflected the changing trials. • Since that time, mainstream America has largely accepted the theory of evolution as an essential part of basic science education. “Some of the characters of the play are related to the colourful figures in that battle of giants; but they have life and language of their own – and, therefore, names of their own.” – Jerome Lawrence Robert E. Lee
Superstitious era • Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution was one of the most revolutionary scientific ideas to emerge during the nineteenth century. • Darwin’s theory caused great controversy as it challenged existing ideas about the origins of humankind, opposing the views of the Bible. •Industrialization, urbanization, long-distance transportation, increased access to education, and wave after wave of immigration transformed the United States from a country composed largely of backwater territories into a modern, egalitarian nation. • Many regions of the country, however, particularly the South and the Midwest, were slow to sacrifice traditional beliefs.
