APPLYING ANALYTIC TECHNIQUES TO BUSINESS2Walmart got its beginnings in 1962 when Sam Walton opened the first store in Rogers,Arkansas. Sam faced little opposition as his competitors believed the idea of discount retailwould never succeed. The company ending up doing so well, he was able to take it public in1970 selling its first stock at $16.50 a share. It made its first billion in sales in 1993 and just amere four years later in 1997, celebrated its first $100 billion in sales.Although Walmart has proved to be a strong competitor in the discount and wholesaleretail industry, e-commerce has changed how business is conducted. This has ultimately shiftedthe way Walmart competes shifting from local shops to now taking on web-based companiessuch as Amazon. In 2018 Walmart's total equity was $79.6 billion dollars and employed 2.2million individuals while Amazon's total equity was $43.55 billion dollars with 575,000employees [ CITATION Bla19 \l 1033 ]. The only way for Walmart to keep its advantage was touse innovation. In the year 2000, Walmart implemented Walmart.com which allowed customersto shop online. In addition to this, robots were implemented to further automate the company’ssupply chain and order process [ CITATION Bla19 \l 1033 ].While brick-and-mortar stores are still huge assets, the implementation of online andmobile shopping has provided the ability to reach customers they were not able to before. Twoyears after this, Walmart topped the Fortune 500 list. It is now comprised of 11,500 stores under56 banners in 27 countries and eCommerce websites. With fiscal year 2020 revenue of $524billion, Walmart employs over 2.2 million associates worldwide and continues to be a leader insustainability, corporate philanthropy, and employment opportunity (Walmart, 2020).Graphical Representation of Data & Descriptive StatisticsDuring the last twelve months, and especially during a global pandemic, Walmart hascontinued to perform well in the discount retail industry.
