GETR 346 Brent Fiorito Response Paper 2/25/08 Worksheet Question 5 Gerstein’s Struggle In the film Amen Gerstein is a tragic hero who continues to try to do the right thing even though his efforts are mostly unsuccessful. Near the end of the movie the Doctor says “Your God will have a really hard time with you” to Gerstein as their riding in a car after the war is lost. The Doctor, who has no conscious or proper sense of morality, is referring to Gerstein’s secret resistance considering his role in the extermination of the Jewish people. Although Gerstein is largely responsible for the production of the chemical zyklon B he was unaware of the way it was being used. He was told it was to be used to purify drinking water for the soldiers and clean their barracks. Once he found out its real purpose he was horrified and began to attempt to undermined shipments and alert outside peoples such as Britain, the United States and especially the Vatican and Pope about what was actually happening in the camps hoping that someone
