GETR 346 Brent Fiorito Response Paper 3/30/08 Fabricating the Past There are few reasons for which someone would construct an alternate past as a Holocaust survivor. People have been embellishing stories about themselves since the beginning of time but to not be a victim of the Holocaust, and vividly depict its horrors as if that person did experience them is very taboo. The Holocaust is a sensitive subject to many people and fabricating a past that entails being in a concentration camp, as Binjamin Wilkomirski did, is fiercely looked down upon. The reasons for this type of fabrication that I can imagine would only be an attempt to make money and profit off of other’s hardships or if the individual was mentally ill/traumatized as in the case of Wilkomirski. In my opinion, embellishment in autobiographies is fairly common throughout history but a total fabrication of one of the world’s most horrible atrocities is simply unacceptable.
