HIST 213 Brent Fiorito Response Paper 1 2/4/08 Slave Treatment In the Ancient World Although I have dealt with the subject of slavery to a certain extent in some of my other history classes I find the treatment of slaves in the ancient world somewhat surprising in that it contradicted my original assumption that slaves were treated equally or more harsh before the eighteenth century. My experience with the subject of slavery does not extend farther than that of the American South in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The treatment of slaves thousands of years ago surprises me not only because of the legal rights that they enjoyed but also because of the roles that they played in ancient society. I would have expected a more cruel and degrading form of slavery mostly because I view American slavery as more advanced and modern. Due to my slight prior knowledge of the subject through history courses I will be writing from a historical point of view.
