Thompson Edited by: Dr. Kay Picart Web Design by: Tami Tomasello ©2001 Introduction W hen we hear or read a story there are clues that give us information about what is going on either in the story or about the type of story that we are reading. The words of the story give us clues about the action, the characters, feelings, and theme of the story. We are able to create pictures in our minds about those elements because, from the time we begin socialization, we are taught to associate images with those words. Every element goes into the telling of the story or the reading of the book goes into a formal mode of information conveyance. The book and the words set the parameters in which the author can create the story. The arrangement of letters in a certain order creates words; words placed in specific orders create sentences, sentences lead to paragraphs. Paragraphs lead to pages and pages lead to books. When you are listening to the story or reading the book you don’t think about how the paragraph was constructed. You don’t think about the how the author chose to give this piece of information or that detail. You don’t think about proper dramatic structure. Even less do you think about how the ink got on the page in just such a way as to form the letters that creates the phrase "Once upon a time. . . " Throughout the history of filmmaking, experimentation, artistic endeavor and plain old economics have helped to create the same type of visual and aural tools that have become institutionalized into a quickly and easily recognizable method of producing a language in films. Classical Hollywood style becomes the means by which narratives are realized; it provides the formal system that enables them to be told, consisting of elements of style.

This lecture is based on the articles by Belton, Classical Hollywood Cinema Style and by Bordwell and Thompson, Style in Citizen Kane . The goals for this lecture are fairly straightforward. I will highlight key terms that you will need to know. On occasion I may not define the term in the lecture but you will find the definition in either the basic elements of film language at the end of this lecture or in your readings for this week. As you go through the lecture you will find text boxes like the one above where I have inserted specific passages of text on from the Citizen Kane article. I have done this in an attempt to maintain some connection with both the film language explored and the film rather than break the issue up into two separate items. Hollywood cinema has traditionally been character -centered cinema. In other words, characters, and what happens to those characters, have driven the action of the story and their reactions are what keep the audiences interested. In some instances interest has been generated enough to allow for multiple episodes of the story to be created,
