Intro to Islam 27/09/2007 08:00:00 Law “Shariah” = “A Way” o An Islamic way of life  o Fiqh = Law o Sources for Law Quran Sunna o Custom of Muhammad as known from Hadith Qiyas o An Analogy Can extend legal rulings It says in the Quran that Wine is prohibited Jurist then analogize that other intoxicating  beverages are prohibited  o I.e. Vodka, Marijuana etc.  Legal Maxim “The Prohibited is delineated; the permissible is general” “not so much regulating personally belief but preserving a stable society.” Sunnis use Ijma/Consensus o When majority of scholars come to consensus, they can make a new  law o Ra’y = Opinion of a scholar  Why do Muslims need Islamic Law? There is no such thing as a separation between Church and State in Islamic  states
