Chapter One Crigler Outline 1) Literature Review:  What are some important points from past research to justify  this study? What is the thesis or main argument of this study? a. There was a past belief that media was not really studied.  “One of the  forces has been the American news media, which, up until the past ten  years or so, was peripherally discussed and rarely accorded the status of  a key player in contemporary politics.”  Previously, the focus of study was  only on specific political institutions and the media was only thought of as  a means of transferring information from government to the public.  b. Main argument:  “News media, while somehow not part of the political  sphere, may affect politics, such an approach emphasizes that the news  media are inherently political and that the manner in which they organize  to perform their tasks have political (if often unintended) consequences.”
