2Theories of SociologySociology is the study of society, human social values, relationships and behavior and theagents of the socialization. The Science of Sociology is important in that it helps identify andprovide solutions to social issues such as crime, poverty, and inequality. Sociologists study socialpatterns in an attempt to answer complex social questions. There are 3 main sociological theoriescalled paradigms. The first is Functionalism or Structural Functionalism which is in essence, theway society functions as a whole unit rather than its parts. The second is Conflict Theory whichclaims that society is always in a state of conflict and its inhabitants are in competition forlimited resources. The third is Symbolic Interactions, which focuses on the use of symbols toestablish meaning within the interactions of individuals in a society. I have been assigned todiscuss the theory and its theorist which I found most interesting so far in this Introduction toSociology course.
