2The Sociology of MeMy name is Naomi Ketor. I Was born in Bronx, New York and moved to Florida at theage of six. I was raised in a two-parent household where both of my parents worked to supportme and my two older sisters. My parents raised up in the Christian Jehovah Witness religion andwe were held to certain standards. In this paper we are going to examine how certain experiencesand the way I was raised made me into the person I am now and how these experiences affectedmy belief system and choices that I make. We will look at how culture, socialization, groupinfluence, education, technology and media have affected my life and also what sociologicalissues I encounter that affect my profession as a registered nurse.Culture and SocializationThey say that your identity can be linked to your culture. “ Where norms tell the actorhow to play the scene, culture tells the actor how the scene is set and what it all means. I still hold certain values that I was taught such asthe value in marriage and respecting the male as the head of the household. Those values andbeliefs were instilled in me and make me a who I am.

As statedpreviously, family is valued in my culture. Family is also the first agent of socialization. Familyare the initial teachers of many objects and ideas as well as the ones who teach you how to relateto other people. Each family may have a different race, social class, and religion that play a rolein socialization. Because of my family’s religion, I was always around people and grew up with
