Before the new government had a chance to come into affect, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are caught at the border trying to leave France with plenty of jewelry and money. a.ii. Undermines the new constitution therefore causing it to last for only one year: Few people trusted Louis XVI. b. Composition b.i. There were people on the Legislative Assembly who wanted to destroy the new constitution and make a new republic. b.ii. There are two subsets: One was called the Girondins. b.ii.1. Favored a republic and drew much of their support from the bourgeoisie. b.iii. The other group was known as the Jacobin. b.iii.1. Wanted a republic as well but drew much of their support from the working class. b.iii.2. Their spokespersons were Maximillien Robespierre and George Danton. b.iii.2.a. Many peasants could easily relate to Danton due to his disheveled appearance and effective oratory skills.
