CHAPTER 8 OUTLINE “Creating Effective Groups: Leading A Group” What is a Leader ? An individual who is perceived by group members as having a legitimate position of power or influence over the group. What is Leadership ? The process of influencing the task and social dimensions of a group to help it reach its goal. Approaches to Leadership Trait approach : suggests that individuals are born with certain personality traits that make them good leaders; a “born leader” Styles approach : examines how an individual leads rather than why an individual becomes a leader. **Autocratic : leader rules with firm control over group process. **Democratic : encourages full participation of group members for decision- making. Laissez-faire : “hands off” leadership; lets the group lead itself. Situational approach : stresses the requirements for effective leadership depends on the actual circumstances. 3 Important Variables
