Qualitative Analysis II: The Iron Group Purpose: The purpose of experiment 19 is to determine the presence of the “Iron Group” ions, Fe +3 , Mn +2 , Ni +2 , Cu +2 , Al +3 , Cr +3 , and Zn +2 , in an unknown solution. Procedure: 1.) Place one mL of the unknown in a centrifuge tube, add 6M NaOH drop wise, until the solution is basic, then add ten extra drops of NaOH. Add five drops of the 1% H 2 O 2 , stir, and then place in the hot water bath for ten minutes. Centrifuge and decant the liquid into a test tube, for further testing. 2.) Wash Precipitate A with 1mL of water and stir gently, centrifuge, and decant the wash solution. Add 1ml of the 1M NH 4 Cl and 2 drops of the 6M NH 3(aq) solution to the precipitate, and gently stir for 3 to 4 minutes. Centrifuge and decant the solution into another test tube (Solution C). Extract precipitate with 1mL of 1M NH 4 Cl and 2 drops of the 6M NH 3(aq) , centrifuge and decant the solution into the test tube containing solution C.
