Explain what it means to say that, for Emerson, individualism is communion with the Universal.-According to Emerson, we are able to connect with the Universal several different ways. One is through a direct relationship with Nature/God; through this we are able to achieve individualism. Our actions are expressive of the universal laws that govern our reality through actions. We are also able to connect with the Universal by looking at the details and individual laws of history, by trying to get to the underlying truth. 2. Explain what it means to say that Kierkegaards conception of individualism is the double movement of religiousness.- What Kierkegaard means by the double movement of religiousness is the movement of Resignation and Faith. Faith is able to manifest itself through passion. It is a paradoxical leap of putting trust in God and acting in the world on that basis. With faith, one is infused with Gods love. Resignation is an intimate movement because it is the process of the willful abandonment of the world and turning to God.
