1RamosLouAnn RamosMilamENGL 1302July 1,2020Attendance MattersCollege students’ grading system should consider attendance rates.Students should attend classes regularly as it is part of their responsibilities. However, noteveryone is on the same page on the topic of whether attendance should be part of the gradingsystem in college. Many believe that attendance is a vital academic activity that impacts thegrades and could help shape the students' career in the future (Dey 29). From this perspective, attendance in college is still important as students get more opportunities to learn. For others, college students should not be monitored for attendance because these students are adults thatcan learn on their own. While the latter argument is valid, it is still recommended that attendancebe counted for in the grading system because it is part of being a student. Attending classesregularly also enhances learning. Students who attend classes regularly are more likely tosucceed because they learn accountability, improve their motivation to learn, they don’t miss outon valuable lessons , and get more opportunities to achieve academic skils.Attending classes regularly gives students more opportunities to learn and facilitateslearning. Instructors are responsible for aiding the students in their learning journey. Mostinstructors are committed to transferring their knowledge effectively to the students. They havealready developed techniques to make students understand the lesson in the most efficient way. Itwould be less complicated for students to learn from an educated instructor as compared to
2Ramoslearning on their own. The effort would also be less for students and the possibility of success inexams is high. In a study conducted by Dey (2018), it was established that enhancing attendanceby 10 percent improves test scores by 0.08 (30). The result of this study proves that the more thestudents attend classes, the more they are likely to pass the exams. As such, attending classesregularly should be mandatory even in college as it makes the transfer of learning more efficient.Attending classes enhances students learning development. Dey's study also found thatattending classes benefits most students because those who are having difficulties understandingthe subject improve their learning by enhancing their attendance rates (39). This means that theylearn more effectively with the help of the instructors. The reason behind this is that students canactively participate in class and ask questions about a topic they barely understand. The studyshowed that self-studying for those who are having difficulties does not help them improve theirexam results. The study proves that for most students, the presence of an educator is crucial. Itgives them more time to do other activities as it lessens the need to study after school hours. This
