ENGR 240 – October 22, 2007 Annealing o Increase ductility o Loses strength and hardness o Three stages Recovery Recrystallization Grain growth o Annealing of Cold Worked metals Effects on mechanical properties o Microstructural changes during annealing Starts soft Elongated after cold work Slip lines form Boundaries are created at the slip lines during recovery Dislocation motion relieves strain Recrystallization Heat is added to reduce the number of dislocations Grains form on the slip lines Complete recrystallization through additional heat More heat causes the structure returns to original state o To analyze annealing We can measure properties as a function of temperature or as a function of times at some high temperature Recorvery Occurs at short times for high temperatures or at low annealing temperatures Removing some point defects (vacancies, self-interstitials) Alignment of dislocations o Polygonization
