MATH 226 – August 29, 2007 Comparative Study – testing of a new method against an existing one o Paired data is preferred when collecting Example: Testing a suspension at the beginning and then retest after a certain amount Replication – be sure that the experiment can be redone and that you are not re-measuring Variables o Response variable – variables that are outside of your control o Managed variable – observed variables that are controlled o Concomitant variables – observed but not of primary interest o Extraneous variables – unobserved, unimportant variables (may also be unaware of them) Control of an extraneous set at one level and measure Block on it, choose some levels and perform the experiment at each level independently Randomized the experiment Types of Experimental Set-ups o Completely Randomized Design (CRD) Randomize everything in the experiment
