BI 103: Integumentary System 16:02     Skin --  Largest Organ (pg. 54) Epidermis: Epithelial tissue o Melanocytes: protect skin from sunlight damage, located at the bottom of  the epidermis Dermis: Connective tissue o Collagen Cells – resist forces o Elastin Fiber Cells – return skin to normal form o Matrix is gel-like filler (water) o Sebaceous Oil Glands – secrete lipid-rich sebum Keeps the skin moist and supple  Hypodermis: Connective tissue Integumentary System Functions Protection Gripping Vitamin D Synthesis Temperature Regulation Sensation o Sensory Neurons: receive information Changes over Time     Puberty: Hormones trigger hair growth, oil production Hair Loss: Hormones (particularly testosterone)
