Romans 1) The uniqueness of Romans a) Romans was not founded by Paul-he never even visited the church b) This letter is not directed at a particular problem c) 1:10-15, 3:8; 6:1; 7:1; 15:22-31 i) Explain himself in the light of misunderstandings (people thought he was teaching them “lawlessness” ii) Paul has to balance the lawlessness and (Jews and Gentiles) that not only Gentiles don’t have to be a Jew to accept Jesus He wants to go to Jerusalem to visit them but hasn’t been able (there is only one group in Christ) iii) Paul wants to use the Roman Church for ministry in Spain and there are some people there that know me. 2) Theme (1:16-17) Key words: a) Ashamed- I am not ashamed of the gospel (to be crucified is a shameful thing) b) Power-It is a powerful book gospel of power c) Faith-comes to those who have faith, trust, and obedience d) Jews- Jews first in the spread of the gospels minority of the Roman Empire e) Righteousness- to be in right standing before the authority f)
