Sociology midterm guideOrganic solidarity (Durkheim):it is said cohesion based upon the dependence individuals have an each other in more advanced societies. Although individuals perform different tasks and often have different values and interest, the order and very solidarity of society depends on their reliance on each other to perform their specified tradesMechanical solidarity: its cohesion and integration comes from the homogeneity of individuals- people fell connected through similar work educational and religious training and life style. (Normally operates in “traditional” and small scale societies, usually based on kinship ties of families networks)Anomic suicide: reflects an individual’s moral confusion and lack of social direction, which is related to dramatic social and economic upheaval. This is failure of economic development and division of labor to produce Durkheim’s organic solidarityFatalistic suicide: the opposite of anomic suicide, when a person is excessively regulated, when their futures are pitilessly blocked and passions violently choked by oppressive discipline.Egoistic suicide: reflects a prolonged sense of not belonging, of not being integrated in a community, an experience, an absence that can give rise to meaninglessness, apathy, melancholy and depression.Altruistic suicide: opposite of egoistic suicide, is characterized by a sense of being overwhelmed by a groups goals and beliefs.Five function of the family1.Division of labor in procuring and processing (obtaining material goods necessary for the sustenance of the family2.Reproduction, and socialization of infants and children3.Management and transmission of property through intergenerational inheritance4.Enabling family members to participate and achieve in extra-family institutions5.Providing emotional warmth, security, and intimacy to individualsAblasé attitude: the modern urbanite is characterized by detachment. Many argue that this culture of poverty does not exist.Concerted cultivation: usually by middle class family, they enroll their children in numerous age specific organized activities that dominate family life and create enormous labor, particularly for mothers.
